Want to Buy the Pope’s Harley?

Mon, 13 Jan 2014

In February, Bohnams auction house in Paris will allow both the Catholic and the Harley faithful to bid on a Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide owned by none other than Pope Francis, himself. Given to the Pope last year as part of the Harley-Davidson 110th anniversary celebration, the bike was unlikely to become the Popecycle because of the security required to protect the pontiff.

The Pope donated the Dyna to the Roman Catholic charity Caritas Roma but not before signing the tank with “Francesco” at a special ceremony at the Vatican last November. As part of Bonham’s Les Grandes Marques du Monde sale held at the Grand Palais in Paris, all proceeds generated from the sale will go towards renovating Caristas Roma’s Don Luigi di Liegro hostel in Rome’s Termini train station. The hostel gives food and shelter to more than 1,000 homeless and disadvantaged people daily.

The expected sale price of between €12,000-€15,000 (approximately $16,000-$20,000) should help a lot of people.

Said Ben Walker, head of motorcycles at Bonhams: “We are incredibly honored to be selling this item on behalf of Caritas Roma. We hope to be able to do both Pope Francis and Harley-Davidson proud by raising a significant amount of money for a very worthy cause.”
