1980 Yamaha XS (1980)
This is a Yamaha XS 650 special which has been lightly customized with low bars, bar end mirrors, fork boots, Harley style mufflers, and a unique seat cowl. The bike has a clear PA title signed by the previous owner. I noticed that while the mileage on the title states 28000 the mileage on the speedometer is 23500. The bike started easily on fresh gas and idled and accelerated smoothly on a 10 mile test drive. I did not exceed 65 mph as the tires are dry and have sidewall cracks, but the bike seemed to have plenty more speed on tap. All gears shifted well and all lights and instruments work. The mufflers are not as loud as they look and bike has a deep mellow tone. The engine does not make any unusual noises. The brakes felt a little spongy and probably need some attention. There is a dent in the tachometer housing (see picture.) There is a deep scratch on the top of the front fender but is is hard to see (see picture.) Mon, 22 Sep 2014Following the success of its MT platform, Yamaha says it will continue to develop new models based on shared platforms, allowing for a choice of multiple models while reducing overall costs. Speaking in a presentation on the company’s business operation, Yamaha Motor President Hiroyuki Yanagi reiterated the strategy of developing multiple models sharing the same engine and frame.
