AMA Pro Racing Announces Tommy Aquino Spirit Award

The sudden and tragic passing of Tommy Aquino has hit the entire motorcycling community hard. In order to preserve and honor the spirit and positive attitude of the late Tommy Aquino, AMA Pro Racing announced today that a “Tommy Aquino Spirit Award” will be granted to an AMA Pro Road Racing rider who best embodies the spirit of the paddock during the 2014 season. The paddock will vote for the rider who exemplifies qualities mirroring those of Tommy including passion for the sport, fan engagement and team interaction. The award will be presented on behalf of Cortech and Shoei at the conclusion of the 2014 AMA Pro Road Racing season. “Over the past eight years we have had the pleasure of working with Tommy Aquino, but he was much more than just another Shoei athlete,” said Hiro Mizushima, President of Shoei Safety Helmet Corp.

In a year that saw Yamaha riders James Stewart, Valentino Rossi, and Ben Spies capture the perfect “trifecta” of World Championships, perhaps one of the most memorable moments for race fans around the world, was “King” Kenny Roberts’ return ride at the infamous Indy Mile in late August. As a year end surprise, Yamaha is pleased to offer race fans around the world a video of this monumental occasion. Rookie of the Year: Crutchlow vs. Abraham

The MotoGP championship is all settled with Casey Stoner lifting the title, but there is still an underlining honour yet to be decided at Valencia; the Rookie of the Year between Cal Crutchlow and Karel Abraham (and Moto2 and 125 - but they seem to be safely in the respective hands of Bradl and Terol). Coming into the final race this weekend, Crutchlow leads Abraham by one point in the championship. Both riders have common knowledge of the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, the Briton having raced there in his World Superbike and Supersport years whereas Abraham scored his only Grand Prix victory at Valencia in his final Moto2 race last season.
