We have no sad pictures of “Third World” children posing next to happy foreigners. What we do have is evidence - evidence of a community in Haïti working with a community in America to get the job done.

It's back to school across the world. From Los Angeles to New York to Petit Goâve, Haïti. Everybody has to get ready for school - and while many Americans pack stores for the latest sales on clothing, the parents of 315 Petit Goâve students have a different dilemma for their children. How do we afford basic school supplies for our kids?

Who are we? Community2Community (C2C). We're not a relief organization branding t-shirts and passing out free...anything.

Community2Community (C2C) is a non-profit service organization, a community of dedicated people in the U.S. and abroad who believe in the promise of a self-sufficient Haïti. We're a grassroots organization in existence for about 3 years, more roots than grass - but good roots nonetheless.

OUR VISION: Creating self-sufficient communities by working with the community.

The work has already begun because the people of Petit Goâve are not waiting on a group of foreigners to fly down to Haïti and do the work. No sir. They've already started the work on their 4 initiatives (water, reforestation, education, and the road.). And C2C has a team on the ground in Haïti that is supporting current efforts on the local level in the coastal town of Petit Goâve, just 42 miles from Port-au-Prince. Our goal is to see this community’s vision realized and our mission accomplished.

OUR MISSION: Mobilizing resources to support the transformation of developing international communities into healthy, self-sufficient communities.

So says the proverb, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he will eat for a life time.” So we are employing parents in our partner communities to be able to provide for the needs of their children themselves.

Q: So, this has nothing to do with the earthquake?
A: Correct, absolutely nothing.

Q: Why not just send books and school supplies to Haïti?
A: At first glance, sending books and school supplies makes sense. But if you think about, it adds up to big deficits, both in the U.S. and Haïti.

First, shipping school supplies to Haïti is expensive. It's dead weight in a brown box and it’s expensive to ship books in a language the students haven't even learned yet.

Second, believe it or not, books are made locally in Haïti too. Donating books locks out local booksellers in Haïti, taking business away from them. So help us stimulate Haïti's local economy by purchasing books in Haïti that are culturally relevant and made in their own language.

Q: Why not just give the money to the parents?
A: Simple. Dignity. We're not here to give handouts. Handouts lead to expectations, entitlement and (unfortunately) dependency. There is no dignity or self-respect in that. Instead, we give them an opportunity to work and hold their head up high.

All the parents who receive money are actually receiving compensation for their work in their community of Petit Goâve, Haïti. No sweatshops here. Instead, their work is local as local gets in the reforestation of their community to help preserve the land and the construction of a water distribution system that we worked with them to build.

This is the essence of C2C, creating self-sufficient communities by working with the community –– so that hopes become realities and the cycle reaffirms itself. We believe our unique model provides a way to reach beyond the pleas and the headlines, as well as the occasional miracle, to result in rebuilding neighborhoods, restoring identity and rejuvenating the spirit. This bike we're selling was donated to Community2Community (C2C) for free, but the cost of shipping it to Haïti and the tariffs in country make it a liability more than an asset for the work we are doing there.

Your purchase will be tax deductible minus the fair market value (Kelley Blue book) of the motorcycle.
