BSA Lightning description

1972 BSA Lightning.  Frame # DE 04409 - Eng. # DE 06382 A65L.  Bike is in very good condition and is mostly original. Engine has lots of compression and is excellent runner, with no abnormal noises. Gearbox shifts smoothly and quietly with no problems. Drive chain and sprockets are in good shape. Has new brakes front and back. All lights, signals and horn operate properly. There is virtually no rust on bodywork and very little on chrome pieces, including wheels and silencers. Tank has been sealed inside and is clean with no leakage or rust. Seat is in good damage free condition, with no cuts or tears. Clutch and all controls operate properly. Ignition has been converted to Boyer Bransden electronic. Charging system converted to Podtronics solid state rectifier and regulator. Paint is good, but not original. (Originally silver; now black.) Only few very minor scratches and dings from usage. Silencers are in good shape, with minimal surface rust, but do have staining from road splash. Engine wet-sumps if left standing for some time, but has alloy finned sump plate installed with magnetic drain plug. Drains down approximately 400ml, or just over half a pint, in a week. Have not (and never would) install anti-drain valve. Both gas taps are very stiff and likely need replacing. Various minor oil leaks from engine, gear box and primary case, but not excessive. Bike drives, steers, and stops well and is fun to ride. Have original ignition and rectifier/charging system pieces, plus number of other spares. Spares include complete (genuine BSA) engine gasket set, number of other gaskets and carburettor parts, brake shoes, airbox and decals, etc, etc. Have reprinted version of BSA workshop manual, an original BSA replacement parts book and both the Haynes and Clymer repair manuals. Have Ontario registration/title in my name and am located in eastern Ontario on the Canada/USA border, across from Massena, NY. Bike can be picked up/released subject to verified payment. Will assist with the shipping/delivery as much as possible, but Buyer is responsible for all actual shipping and transport arrangements, including any costs incurred.

What’s Old Is New Again – Video

Mon, 14 Oct 2013

There’s something distinctly cool about old British motorcycles. From the wire wheels, the minimal bodywork, and the exposed engines which give off a thunderous bark, I’ve always loved looking at old Triumphs, BSAs and the like from the 60s.  I’ve never owned one though. The reason is simple: old British bikes are needy little maintenance machines notorious for the odd oil leak.

The Steve McQueen Desert Racer

Tue, 24 Mar 2009

There are few motorcycle icons within pop culture that have endured as vividly as that of the late, great Steve McQueen. A man who was at one time the highest paid actor in Hollywood, he avoided the limelight in favor of immersing himself within his passion for motorcycles. Never afraid of getting dirty, McQueen was at his happiest flogging a bike around the track with fellow racers or tinkering with the machines himself.
