BMW Set Record with 115,215 Motorcycles Sold in 2013Mon, 13 Jan 2014
BMW continues to set sales records, announcing the sale of 115,215 motorcycles in 2013. This marks the third consecutive year of record sales, following the 106,358 motorcycles in 2012 and 104,286 motorcycles sold in 2011.
We already knew BMW was going to have a banner year last month, when the German manufacturer passed its 2012 figures in just 11 months. Another strong month of 6,343 motorcycles sold in December helped increase the final 2013 sales tally to an 8.3% increase over 2012.
“I should like to thank all our customers most sincerely for the trust they have placed in us,” says Stephan Schaller, president of BMW Motorrad. “Due to the high level of popularity of our motorcycles and maxi scooters we have been able to achieve growth in all sales regions. This demonstrates that our product offensive has put us on the right course.”
Unsurprisingly, Germany remains BMW’s largest market with 21,473 motorcycles sold in 2013 (up 4.7% from 20,516 motorcycles). The U.S.A. is BMW’s second largest market for motorcycles, with the 14,100 motorcycles sold in 2013 representing a 16.9% increase over 2012′s total of 12,057 motorcycles.
“In some markets growth reached double figures, such as the USA and Russia,” says Schaller. “Germany remains our most successful individual market. However, we saw very positive sales developments in South America and Asia, too. And despite the difficult market environment that persists in Europe, we once again asserted and further extended our market leadership in the relevant capacity segment over 500 cubic centimetres in Germany, Spain and Italy. In the crisis-ridden markets of Italy and Spain we were able to achieve growth for the first time in years despite the fact that the market as a whole was heavily in decline in those countries.”
The R1200GS continues to be BMW’s most successful model, with more than 30,000 units sold in 2013, with the new liquid-cooled version representing nearly 25,000 units, a BMW record for a new model in its launch year. The F800GS was the second highest seller at 10,166 units, followed by the similar F700GS at 7,155 units.
