2014 Star Bolt Recalled in Canada for Wiring Harness Routing (UPDATE: Bolt Recalled in US Too)

Thu, 18 Jul 2013

The 2014 Star Bolt is subject to a new recall in Canada because of the routing of its wiring harness. The recall applies to both the Bolt and the Bolt R-Spec. (UPDATE: NHTSA has also announced a recall for the U.S. market.)

According to Transport Canada, the wiring harness on certain units of the Yamaha Bolt or Yamaha Bolt R-Spec (as the Star Bolt models are named in Canada) may have been routed too close to the rear exhaust. Heat from the exhaust may damage the wiring, potentially leading to the engine stalling or a loss of propulsion. Either situation could increase the risk of a crash.

The problem was first identified on July 5 in Japan during an internal Yamaha quality control review.

Yamaha dealers will install retaining bands around the wiring harness to prevent it from coming too close to the exhaust. The Canadian recall affects 626 units, while in the U.S., the recall affects 3900 units.
