2013 AMA Supercross Anaheim 2 Race ReportMon, 21 Jan 2013
Ryan Villopoto claimed his first win of the 2013 AMA Supercross season and his first since the knee injury at last year’s Seattle round that kept him out of the 2012 AMA Motocross championship. The victory in front of 37,789 fans at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., made up for his disappointing 16th place finish two weeks earlier at the same site.
Canard took the lead in Lap 2 and last week’s winner Barcia moved briefly into second on Lap 3 before coming short on a triple jump and crashing out. That opened room for Rockstar Suzuki‘s Davi Millsaps and Villopoto to move into the top three. Villopoto passed Millsaps on Lap 5 and took over the lead a lap later, hanging on to win by 6.886 seconds.“I’m happy to get this win out of the way,” says Villopoto. “We made progress each weekend and felt really good coming into today. My starts were much better, which made it much easier. I just took my time, was patient, and made clean passes. Every win is good, but this one is nice to get the ball rolling for the rest of the season.”
Second place went to Canard followed by fellow Honda rider Chad Reed. The TwoTwo Motorsports racer earned the final podium position, his first of the season, after taking advantage of a Millsaps tip-over.
Despite missing the podium Millsaps leads all riders with 63 points after three rounds. Just 1 points separates first from fourth however, and with three different winners in as many rounds, the top of the standings will likely change considerably after next week’s round at O.co Stadium in Oakland, Calif.2013 AMA Supercross: Anaheim 2 Top Five Results Pos.
