OEMs Plug into Electric Bikes

KTM introduced its prototype electric motorcycle earlier this week, and electric bike manufacturer Zero Motorcycles almost immediately responded by opening sales on its 2009 Zero X dirt bike (look for our review of the 2008 model next week!). But these two companies aren’t the only ones exploring the possibilities of electric-powered motorcycles. In September, Japan’s largest industrial information journal Nikkei Business Daily reported that both Honda and Yamaha have set target dates for launching their own electric-powered motorcycles.

The Red Bull Romaniacs enduro rallye in Sibiu, Romania is one of the most challenging events on the calendar. It must be, if this Enduro-Cross-style prologue to the four-day race is any indication. KTM's return to racing in the Moto3 class has resulted in one of the most exotic race machines for the new four-stroke replacement class. The lightweight 24kg 250cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine has been connected to a trellis frame, and it is all contained within a beautifully crafted carbon-fibre shell that includes a self-supporting seat unit. Now in its second stage of development, the whole package has been pretty impressive in testing, with Red Bull Ajo KTM riders Danny Kent and Sandro Cortese putting in some fast laps.
