BMW R-Series description

This is a fantastic 1971 BMW R75/5 that has just had a full restoration. Starts and runs perfectly. Super smooth ride. About as close as you can get to a new 1973 R75/5.

Comes with clean California title in my name. Original California blue plate will be included to California buyers.

I purchased the bike after it had been sitting for several years. Being that I run a BMW restoration shop I did what I always do, strip the entire bike down and rebuild to specifications.

Mechanical:
Engine disassembled and measured.
Timing chain replaced with new along with chain tensioner and crank and cam seals.
Cylinders honed.
Piston rings replaced.
Cylinder heads rebuilt with valves and guides. Hardened exhaust valve seats so unleaded fuel can be used. Heads milled.
Gaskets and seals replaced as needed.
Replace rear seal.
Replace oil filter with new. Replace pan gasket and copper crush washer. Fill with Valvoline 20w50.
Replace clutch and plates
Carburetors rebuilt with new parts as needed.
Transmission inspected. Excellent condition so input splines were lubed and fluids replaced with Valvoline 80W90. Copper crush washers replaced with new.
Final drive unit was in excellent condition. Cleaned. Fluids changed. Splines lubed. Copper crush washers replaced with new.
Drive shaft had bad u-joint so was replaced.
New rubber drive shaft boot.
Ignition points and condenser replaced with new.
Ignition advance unit rebuilt.
Diode board tested.
Alternator cleaned and inspected. Charges as it should.
Petcocks rebuilt. Fuel line replaced with factory braided line.
All electrical components inspected and repaired as needed. All work correctly.

Cosmetic restoration:
Frame and sub frame painted
Gas tank and fenders professionally painted with single stage black enamel paint and hand pin stripped by legendary pin stripper Tommy Otis. Best I've found I'm my 25 years of restoration.
Gas tank interior striped and coated with Redkote fuel tank coating. The closest thing to factory coating.
Matte finish on side panels and battery covers painted with correct matte black paint.
Most all exposed fasteners and parts originally finished in cad plating have been re plated with new cad plating.
New headlight chrome ring.
Battery tray and license plate bracket repainted with single stage black paint.
Aluminum polished as would be from factory.
Headers in great condition so cleaned.
Mufflers replaced with new.
Fork rebuilt with new seals and bumpers.
New brake, clutch, and throttle cables.
New rubber foot pegs and hand grips.

Speedometer completely rebuilt by Palo Alto Speedometer.

I did not recover the original seat. I think the original is really cool. I do have new seat covers in stock and am happy to replace if buyer would like.

Also tires are not great. All riders like different tires so I will let buyer purchase desired type. I am also happy to help with this. I have a good distributor and am happy help you get them purchased and mounted.

The photos show missing locks. I am having cleaned and will install when back from locksmith. Also one tank emblem has a chip. I will replace with good emblem.

I have a ton of photos from assembly and after that I am happy to send on request. Can also supply video of cold start and running or can do over phone if you prefer. Local buyers strongly suggested to inspect in person.

The future of law enforcement?

Mon, 12 Jul 2010

THANKFULLY you're not looking at latest addition to the US Police force's motorcycle fleet - it's the futuristic machine that featured in the 2009 movie "Star Trek" .It's being prepped before being suspended mid-air in the "Born to be Wild: Vintage and Celebrity Motorcycles" exhibition in the Reagan Library's Air Force One Pavilion in Simi Valley, California. Looks a bit like a BMW R1200S, don't you think?
