Cycle X  Pro Street Hot Rod Honda CB750 Trike

Up for auction is the Cycle X Hot Rod Honda Trike featured in "The Horse" magazine.

Because Cycle X is know for vintage, aggressive high horsepower Honda CB750's, we thought: "Lets see what an old Honda trike could look like Cycle X style." Keep in mind, comfort, fuel mileage and practicality means nothing to us, coolness means everything.

Starting off with a Cycle X drop seat frame and rear end combo was an easy choice because of the low, don't mess with me look. Building bikes starts to get fun when they are wheels, so lets get some wheels. We had a Cycle X bowing team for about a year or two and one of the fellow bowlers was a Chevy nut and just happened to have a set of Camaro wheels in his trunk. The wheels are a little billet looking for me, but they look racey.

Some Yokohama 225/33R17 tires were installed and we started to notice a problem matching the front wheel to the rear mags. Keeping a bike vintage looking with the addition of billet stuff might be a challenge. With the vintage Honda CB750 front end mount, the front wheel options will be limited. A Cycle X friend had a good idea, lets take a Harley wheel we had laying around the shop and try to mount it to the Honda front end. Todd (our business partner) proceeded to cut the front hub in half and machine the Harley aftermarket wheel somewhat and a bunch of hours later it bolted right on (done!).

We added the mini front wheel speedo (one of our favourite inventions) and moved onto the next procedure on the list.

With the ultimate bar hopper on wheels the fun begins, the seat was going to be easy because we like solo seats and riding double is certainly out of the question. This trike was starting to look super aggressive and the gas tank would need some serious thought. We took an old deadmans gas tank, cut it in half and dished the underside installing two Pingel petcocks.

Old Honda's are dry sump motors so we selected an off-the-shelf oil tank and welded in some bigger bungs for 1/2" oil lines. The fancy oil lines were obtained from Summit racing and the 4 quart oil tank was mounted off-set a little. The hot rod motor will need a good supply of oil and the chain the chain would be a problem  with the low seated frame so the oil tank is off-set.

The rear brakes needed a larger master cylinder to operate the multi-piston calipers so we selected a Wilwood master cylinder from the car world. The brake pedal and foot pegs were mounted in the stock position making this trike the most awkward thing I've ever sat on (looks good though).

The police said we need light... so we mounted some.

What about the motor? Well, stock CB750s had about 50hp and as great as they are and were... father time is catching up with them. 40 plus years later, the motors need a make-over, rebuild  and 50hp wont cut it. We installed a ton of Cycle X go-fast motor stuff with a rack of 36mm carburettors to make this trikes performance back up its aggressive appearance.
