1st off I am located in Altmar NY 13302 about 1/2 hr north of Syracuse, so please keep that in mind when bidding or if you would like to come check out the bike in person. I am selling one of my 1981 Maico 490s. This bike was just a display bike after it was restored, and has not seen gas since the resto 6 or so years ago. This bike was put together using all excellent condition original or high quality new components. The engine was a very low hr wide ratio 1981 490, it got all new seals, bearings, and rebuilt crank with a new rod. The 87mm bore and Wiseco piston were excellent, so the cylinder, just got a hone and a new ring (another new spare ring is also included). It has perfect compression. The engine cases are in amazing mint condition, and that includes the clutch cover, which usually gets damaged from the kick start lever. All gears, and shafts are perfect, including the splines on the shift and kick shafts, like I said, this was a very low hr engine. The bike shifts thru the gears perfectly. The clutch is in excellent condition with new primary chains, and it has one of the nicest feels at the lever that I have ever felt on a Maico. The factory Motoplat ignition gives a strong bright blue spark. The pipe is a vintage Jemco that is in amazing condition, with just a some tiny roost dings on its front edge. The silencer is a vintage Richter in like new condition. The 40mm Bing 54 carb is absolutely perfect. It has a Race Base UK billet O ringed intake manifold. All of the plastics except the tank are new glossy repros (though they now have some handling marks on them from the bike being displayed at various vintage events), with MXM graphics. The tires are new Kenda Millvilles, mounted on near perfect original Akronts, laced with stainless Buchanon spokes in a Wheelsmith wrap pattern to absolutely perfect hubs. There are billet goodies, that include, Zeta engine kill switch, Rage Racing brake pedal, M/O case saver, Race Base UK intake manifold, gas cap, engine oil fill plug, and wide stainless IMS footpegs, and polished aluminum rear chain guide. The rear brake arm is a stainless affair with stainless aircraft grede heim joint at the brake pedal. The front forks are absolutely perfect with no pitting, are laser straigh, and have new seals and dust covers, mated up to perfect polished double pinch bolt triple clamps. Mint vintage Magura clutch, brake and compression levers and mint vintage Whirlpool throttle all operate new Terrycable cables, mounted on new Renthal bars, w new Scott grips. The seat cover is a new gripper seat over nice original foam and base. The frame is actually a 1981 350 numbered MC 250 frame, that is absolutely straight. There is zero weld or crack repairs, no dents or damage to the bottom cradle, and only 1 dent on the rear left down tube about 2" up from the swingarm pivot near where your ankle would be. The swingarm is perfect and straight. The frame, swingarm, fork lowers, and shock springs were all powder coated RAL3000 which is the absolute closest match to the original Mars Red. The chain and sprokets are either new or like new. The original Corte Cosso shocks were rebuilt at the time of the build, but seem to have lost nitrogen pressure thru the years as there seems to be very little damping. If being used as a race bike, I wouldnt use them anyway!!! If the original hardware was not in very nice condition, it was replaced with new mostly stainless stuff. The lower triple clamps, handlebar clamps, rear chain guide, front brake stay and lever, Magura hand levers, Richter silencer and near mint rear brake backing plate were all polished to a mirror finish. Again, this bike again has not been started since it was assembled, and I cant remember if I even set the ignition timing, so it will need a once thru, oil and gas added before it is started. But I know the carb is perfect and I am sure I set that up to match what I was racing at the time, and if raced, the suspension should be given a once thru, maybe Gold Valves in the forks, and the shocks replaced with some Ohlins, Works, Race Techs, or Fox shocks (I run Fox Factory and RaceTechs on my 2 81 Maico race bikes. All the wheel bearings and chassis bearings are either new or like new and fully greased. I think that pretty much covers everything, but please as always ask any questions you may have. I will assist in loading the bike for shipping or any reasonable help I can give, and the bike will be sold with a bill of sale. Thanks, Rob 315 298 6797
