Honda to Compete in 2013 Dakar Rally

Honda announced it will enter a works team in the 2013 Dakar Rally‘s motorcycle class, returning to the event for the first time in 23 years. The Japanese manufacturer competed in the Rally from 1981 to 1989 when it was known as the Paris-Dakar Rally. Honda won five times during that period but then stopped entering its own team.

Based on the concept model unveiled last October at Intermot 2008, the new motorcycle is expected to be a sport-tourer powered by a 1200cc V-4 engine with variable cylinder technology which can allow it to run on only two cylinders to conserve fuel.  There are also rumors that the motorcycle will have a semi-auto gear box which will give the rider the option of going manual or automatic. Honda has a dedicated website for the V4 where you can enter for a chance to win a spot to be one of the first to test drive the new bike, unfortunately, the contest is only open to Europeans. Casey Stoner Testing The Honda RC213V At Motegi – Video

Casey Stoner made a surprise return to MotoGP recently, participating in a two-day test with former employer, Honda. Check out the video below to see the former champ in action. The test took place at the Honda-owned Motegi circuit, where Stoner rode the 2013 model in the morning session before switching to 2014 machinery — the same spec bikes Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez currently pilot — in the afternoon.  Unfortunately, the Australian only managed six laps during the first day of testing due to rain, but completed 47 laps the following day when conditions were much better.
