Harley-Davidson Other description

1937 Harley Davidson WL 45 cui flathead.

This is a non original bike with current registration in California. I have the pink slip in my name and it’s a  clear title  It starts, stops ,runs ,and rides well .  Shifts fine with no issues other than the occasional back fire due to (I believe) its air intake at the exhaust to cylinder joint, no unusual noise from the engine or trans.  I have ridden fewer than 3,000 miles on a newly rebuilt engine and trans.  The engine casing is stamped WL37, the trans as I am lead to believe is from a similar period.   16’ wheels ,good Coker tires, star hubs  on both wheels, original Springer front forks and hubs with aftermarket damper.

I purchased this bike a few years ago that was on consignment at a Californian shop that had rebuilt the engine and transmission.  I have no paper work indicating that the engine and trans had been rebuilt(all new gaskets  etc..).  The owner had the receipts, I didn’t get them, but I was told and believe the engine and trans had been rebuilt by the owner of the shop.  He completed the work himself.  Shortly after purchase, I took the trans back due to poor shifting and they fixed it for free. I dealt with the shop directly for the purchase.

I converted the bike to 12volt system, automatic advance and retard distributor which has an auto exhaust clamp  securing it, which was installed the night before the maiden trip from San Francisco to Paso Robles.   I installed the exhaust clamp because the aftermarket clamp did not work  and I've kept it on for good luck ever since.  The bike has buck horn bars welded on to a triple tree, reproduction sparto rear light, and a repo front head light, which all work.  The ignition lights do not work.  The bike also has bobbed front and rear aftermarket fenders, original WL uncut frame, Mikunni carb and throttle set up, original police siren cover on the air filter, and an open short exhaust (which is loud).  It also has a later period original Harley  Speedo that does not work.  The Speedo cable is present.  The horn doesn't work.   The seat is from a panhead, and  has been recovered with leather and no padding.  The bike also comes with leather saddle bags,  a front leather tool bag, and an original Bates fender pad. The gas tank has no leaks and looks too straight to be original. When this bike is left for weeks or months at a time the oil drains from the top tank and some oil leaks from the scavenger pump.  When the bike is restarted half a quart pumps out of the scavenger pump.  I have been told this is the normal deal with this era of bike.

This bike is in what is often termed “barn find “condition, meaning it has not been fauxed to look like this...time and use has done its thing.  It's not an original bike, if you want originality please look elsewhere.

Please contact me with any questions prior to bidding.  I will be happy to try to answer them as quickly as possible.  I will also safely assist with your shipper of choice, but have no means to deliver this bike to you.  I will also not be responsible for any damage or any other issues that occur in shipping.  I also have this bike up for sale locally.  Thanks for looking.

Motorcycles at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show

Mon, 28 Sep 2009

Two weeks ago, I took a break from my regular duties gathering news for Motorcycle.com to fly to Germany to cover the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show for our sister site AutoGuide.com. For two hectic days, AutoGuide editor Colum Wood and I scrambled across the massive 6.2 million square foot Messe Frankfurt trade fair compound, running from press conference to press conference to get the latest on exotic sport cars, futuristic concept models and international unveilings from the automotive world. It was heaven for car lovers, but for me, it meant fighting my way through hordes of photogs, auto-journalists and car show models to get the first photos of four-wheeled goodies from MINI, Ferrari and Lotus.
