Elena Myers First Woman to Win at Daytona

Mon, 19 Mar 2012

Elena Myers made history once again, winning the second of two AMA Supersport races at Daytona International Speedway. The win was Myers’ second professional AMA victory and gives her the distinction of being the first female racer to ever win a professional motorsports race at the famed Daytona circuit.

The SuzukiScoopFans M4 Suzuki rider became the first woman to win an AMA race, taking an AMA Supersport race at Infineon Raceway in 2010. That race ended on a red flag however, making her Daytona win her first in an interrupted race, with the checkered flag waving as she crossed the finish line first in the second Supersport race 0.239 second ahead of Corey Alexander.

Myers was also in the hunt for a podium finish in the first race but settled for a sixth place, finishing 0.760 seconds behind the winner James Rispoli. In that first race, Myers proved to be a victim of the draft which other riders used to pass her on the final lap.

Myers adapted her strategy in the second race, moving into the lead and then laying down as low as possible on her Suzuki GSX-R600‘s fuel tank to reduce the drafting effect on riders behind her.

“These guys were super-fast all weekend and they ran a great race – I was just trying to stay with them,” says Myers. “Yesterday I got the short end of the draft and I was happy today there were only four of us up in the lead pack instead of eight.”

After the race, Myers received some congratulations from someone who knows a thing or two about winning at Daytona: five-time Daytona 200 winner Scott “Mr. Daytona” Russell.

“You know you’ve done good when Mr. Daytona texts you and calls you Ms. Daytona! What a day… Still has’t sunk in!” Myers wrote on her Facebook page.
