Rossi vs. Schumacher

Fri, 14 Nov 2008

When I was a kid, my friends and I would always have this debate on who would be fastest in a race, Superman or the Flash. I always felt that the Flash would be faster because speed’s his thing. He wears a lightning bolt on his chest because he’s as fast as lightning. Superman? He’s only faster than a speeding bullet. That’s pretty quick, but it can’t compare to lightning. Of course, my friends would come back with the equally persuasive argument that Superman is, well, Superman.

We always wound up with a compromise: if they’re racing on the ground, Flash would be faster because he’s a better runner. If they were moving through the air, Superman would win because Flash would use up too much energy trying to get in the air by flapping his arms really fast or spinning his limbs like little cyclones. If they were racing under water, then they’d both lose to Aquaman. No, wait, Aquaman sucks. He’d come in a distant third. Maybe fourth if Michael Phelps was there.

This week, news broke that MotoGP Champ Valentino Rossi was going to test Ferrari Formula One race car. A few days later, reports out of Italy quote Honda Europe’s racing chief Carlo Fiorani saying that F1 legend Michael Schumacher is welcome to race for Honda’s World Superbike team if he so chooses. This, of course, leads to the ultimate question:

Who’s faster, Vale or Schumi?

Let’s look at the stats:

Valentino Rossi Michael Schumacher Age 29 years old 39 years old Nationality Italian German World Titles 8 7 Career Wins 97 91 Career Podiums 151 154 Career Poles 51 68

So what do you think? Who’s the fastest?
