Latest on my S1000RR

Mon, 04 Oct 2010

Not sure what's going on with the sound in this vid, but it calms down after a minute - sorry!

As my long term BMW S1000RR does most of its miles working hard on track days, I felt an early 6000 mile service might be a good idea. A quick phone call to my local dealer (the friendly and efficient Pidcocks) saw my bike in the workshop the following week and back in my hands by lunchtime. This service costs £179.50 plus vat and for this you get oil and filter change plus a thorough check over of virtually everything. On arrival I was advised a new cut off switch and air box breather pipe would be fitted, an update and safety measure to prevent the motor trashing itself should it fall over with the throttle stuck open.

As I had been experiencing some slight brake fade, Pidcocks also changed the brake fluid which I’m happy to report has cured the problem. When chatting about brakes the guys in the service department said BMW  UK have sent a memo to dealers saying aftermarket brake pads should be avoided, as some may fall out when they wear down! I need to investigate this further so I’ll be sticking with the genuine article in the meantime thanks. Unfortunately a vibrating front brake lever over the last few days tells me I now have a warped disc that needs changing so another visit to Long Eaton is on the cards soon.

My Metzeler Interact Sportec M5s also seem to be doing a good job and certainly wearing better than the standard fit Racetech 3s. Ok, the front may wander slightly more when pushed on track days but the rear grip seemed similar with or without the traction control. And finally, I’ve got my hands on some handsome ‘Stomp Grip’ tank grippy things that I’m told will improve my riding ten fold...watch out Troy Corser.

With my beast totally refreshed where better to go than to the wonderful Donington Park. Forgive the quality this time (I’m new to this video lark) but check out my laps (3rd one is best) if you want some lines that helped lead GPs and win BSB races there in the dim and distant. Thanks to John at www.Procam-sports-productions.co.uk for this one.
