Intermot 2012: 2013 Triumph Street Triple, Street Triple R Revealed

Tue, 02 Oct 2012

Triumph has redesigned its Street Triple for 2013, revealing the updated 675cc naked bikes at the 2012 Intermot show in Cologne, Germany.

2013 Triumph Street Triple and the slightly more up-spec Street Triple R receive an all-new chassis featuring aluminum beam twin-spar frames and two-piece die-cast rear subframes. According to Triumph, the new chassis optimizes agility and handling with fewer welds than the previous frame and helping reduce the overall wet weight by 13 pounds to 403 pounds.

Also improving handling is the new position of the exhaust, moving from below the seat to a low-mount position on the right side. The exhaust’s new location contributes to mass centralization, allowing Triumph engineers to reduce the Street Triple’s rake to 24.1º from 24.3º and increasing the trail to 99.6 mm from 95.3 mm. The Street Triple R’s geometry has also changed, with its rake and trail now measuring 23.4 º/95.0 mm from 23.9º/92.4mm.

The base Street Triple is equipped with an unadjustable 41mm KYB upside-down forks while the Street Triple R’s fork is fully adjustable, while its rear monoshock is adjustable for preload and rebound damping. Both models come standard with switchable ABS and 310mm dual brake discs, though the R version uses four-piston Nissin calipers compared to the base model’s two-piston components.

The 12-valve 675cc three-cylinder engine returns untouched, still claiming 105 bhp and 50 ft-lb. and tuned for low-to-mid-range performance.

Other standard features include an LCD display with lap timer, fuel gauge, clock, gear change lights and gear indicator, and an engine immobilizer to guard against theft.

Triumph has also prepared a number of accessories for the Street Triple including color-matched fly screens, belly pans, Arrow exhausts and quick shifter. Also available is a tire pressure monitor that works with the LCD screen.

The 2013 Triumph Street Triple will be available in Phantom Black, Crystal White and Caribbean Blue. The 2013 Triumph Street Triple R will be offered in Phantom Black, Crystal White and Matte Graphite, all with red rear subframes and matching radiator shroud and pinstriped wheels. The Street Triple will be available at North American Triumph dealerships in January 2013. U.S. pricing will be announced later this month.
