1967 Other Makes Matchless Norton 750 Hybrid on 2040-motos

     

     This Matchless G15CSR, along with 21 other vintage motorcycles has been on display since May at The Northwoods Petroleum and Motorsports Museum in Three Lakes, Wisconsin.

     In 1964, Matchless and Norton were both owned by AMC in England.  Matchless was on the verge of going bankrupt and for the next three years used the famous reliable Norton 750cc Atlas engines.  They were stock right from the factory and were titled as Matchless.  There were very few manufactured for the next three years and in 1967, according to my research, less than 500 and possibly less than 200 were built.  This Matchless should be worth more than a Norton in similar shape due to scarcity.  I have a very reasonable reserve on it.

      I acquired this bike from an old collector, who restored it, but drove it very little in the last 13 years.  It's been one of my dream bikes and was going to replace my 1966 Triumph Bonneville, but being in my 70th year and having had 3 knee surgeries, I can't kick it over very well.  However, on November 15th I squirted gas in the carbs, kicked it over three times and it fired right away.  It has incredible compression.  I then sprayed fogging oil in the carbs and directly in both cylinders and drained all gas.  It was also started in May of this year.

     During restoration, the engine was gone over and  replacements included handlebars and mirrors, spark plug wires, gas and oil lines, chain guard, side covers, both fenders, kick starter  and foot pegs, shock absorbers, air filters and all lights and fixtures, etc. Tires are like new, still showing the nubs. The original tachometer presently has a Smith's speedometer in its place.  This Matchless looks absolutely gorgeous and looks very close to a new bike.  It is presently located in Eagle River, WI but am bringing it near northern Illinois and Racine Wisconsin on Nov 22nd.
