Norton Combat Commando description

1972 NORTON COMBAT COMMANDO 750 ROADSTER

INCLUDES SHIPPING TO YOUR DOOR (In the continental U.S., credit for international shipping)

REFURBISHED SURVIVOR, NUMBERS-MATCHING, ICONIC HOT ROD BRITBIKE

NO RESERVE - YOU BID, YOU WIN!

On offer is a somewhat collectible Combat Commando, which is the high compression variant of the '72-only Commando 750 Roadster.

The bike was somewhat derelict, but managed to retain the original tank & Fireflake Purple paint, and most importantly, the original numbers-matching frame and high compression engine. I've done a nominal "make-run" refurbishing with good serviceable replacement parts of the same general vintage, type and style. IT IS NOT RESTORED. I am including a very specific list of non-original parts that were used. For all intents and purposes, it is essentially original.

Here is specific information about every aspect of this motorcycle, as far as can be determined after tearing the motorcycle down. Short of tearing the bike down, the following information is one of the most complete descriptions of a bike for sale that you can or will find:

CHASSIS & SUSPENSION - All original as dispatched from the factory. Frame has been touchup painted with Rust-O-Leum. Most original fasteners are in place, nothing appears to be damaged to the point that it could not be refurbished or restored. Some missing nuts and bolts have been replaced with standard hardware, such as the 4 smaller Z-plate bolts with nuts, chrome primary cover center nut, headlight mounting bolts, and muffler hangar hardware. Shocks are in decent shape, touchup painted, swingarm moves freely; shocks do not appear to have leaked. Forks have been flushed and refilled, they have some minor pitting in the seal contact area. Steering neck rotates freely through the entire turning radius, Yokes have been painted with Rust-O-Leum. Centerstand is missing, sidestand has been touchup painted. Frame appears to be straight but unknown if it was ever wrecked. Isolastic suspension units are all original (fair condition, should be replaced), new rear mounting bolt & nuts.

WHEELS, BRAKES & TIRES - All original; both rims have rusted chrome. Rear hub has new cush rubbers. Front brake disc has been wire wheeled and the center has been touchup painted.Tires are old but still hold air! Front brakes have been flushed and new seals installed, rear brakes are decent original shoes.

ENGINE - Original Combat specification, but the cylinders are used .020 over replacements, as are the pistons & rings.Original "C" stamped Combat cylinder head has been cleaned up; one each intake valve and guide were replaced, all valves lapped to their respective seats (photo). No cracked fins or stripped threads anywhere. Cases & covers have some minor scratches and are dull (photos), primary cover has a previously repaired crack, does not seem to leak. Timing & points covers are replacements in good condition, new seals in timing cover. Clutch has been thoroughly refurbished, friction plates are high-end Sureflex lightweight composites (photo). Clutch lever pull can be improved (lighter) with addition of one thin spacer plate. Alternator has been cleaned and reinstalled. Transmission has been thoroughly flushed. Timing & primary chains have been cleaned and adjusted.

INTAKE & EXHAUST - Original Amal 932 concentric carbs, all original spec internals, thoroughly cleaned, with some replacement gaskets, on original manifolds; K&N pod filters (may need some jetting adjustment for best performance with installed exhaust system). Fair set of original headers, chrome mostly dull / surface rusted; rough rose nuts with some broken fins. Almost new set of Emgo replica Dunstall Decibel mufflers with "six shooter" outlet pipes. Muffler hangar system is missing intermediate plates, one fabricated main plate, 4 new rubber buffers.

IGNITION - Original Lucas points & Auto Advancer Unit, condensers, and dual 6V coils. All cleaned, serviced and adjusted

HAND & FOOT CONTROLS - Rearset folding footpegs (photos), reversed shifter (reshaped in John Player Norton style), Tarozzi rear brake lever. Custom rear brake cable abutment & cable yoke to pedal arm (photo). All original hand controls including throttle, front brake and clutch levers. Front brake master cylinder rebuilt with new kit.

ELECTRICAL & LIGHTING - Mostly original electrical system including wiring harness, tail light with somewhat rare original Lucas "beehive" lens in excellent condition (photo), horn, thumb switch clusters, 2MC capacitor, charging assimilator, ballast resistor, diode rectifier and zener diode regulator. Replacment OEM spec headlight with idiot lights & light switch (photo).  Replacement used keyswitch (photo), new AGM battery. All connections were checked and cleaned.

METERS - Original Smiths meters, tach works, speedometer requires rebuild.

CABLES - Assumed to be all original cables with the exception of the rear brake cable which is similar vintage & condition. All working properly.

BODYWORK - Original "Fireflake Purple" gas tank in fair condition with significant sun fade; inside is somewhat gummed up. It is recommended that the tank be professionally stripped and lined before regular use and/or repainting. This tank WILL NOT hold up with modern / ethanol fuels. Good replacement fuel taps installed. Original gas cap. Seat is a replacement in good condition. Both fenders are original, cleaned up; some minor scuffs and dings. Missing both sidecovers. Original oil tank in very good condition, flushed, jet washed and spray painted, with new rubber mount buffers.

CYCLE PARTS - Original battery tray, spray painted. Replacement Z-plate footpeg mounts in very good condition. Replacement set of OEM headlight mounts in similar condition as the bike. Original coil mount base, 1 replacement coil mount loop. Original meter mounts, cleaned up. Fabricated keyswitch mount (photo).

DOCUMENTATION - This bike is sold with Bill of Sale ONLY.

SHIPPING - Enclosed shipment to buyer's door in the Continental U.S. is included in the auction price. I will credit $500 of the final auction price toward international / overseas shipping. If crating is required, cost is responsibility of the buyer; I will disassemble and/or crate the bike FOR AN ADDITIONAL FEE.

BOTTOM LINE

As with every bike, project and part I’ve sold online in over 15 years (with 100% satisfaction), the above listing contains NO HYPE, NO FLUFF, AND NO BULL. Photos clearly show condition as described above, and include all details on the bike.

This is a good, solid Combat Commando that performs well for it's age. It is NOT a modern sportbike, does not accellerate, handle, or brake like a modern sportbike, and cannot handle as much abuse like smokey burnouts, wheelies and stoppies like a modern sportbike. It does NOT have a rev limiter and the engine will blow if it's run past red line. It is NOT restored, it was NOT overhauled. It was refurbished to basic running condition.

Installation of OEM mufflers, sidecovers, footpegs and air filter will have this bike in almost 100% original condition in about 2 hours. There are less than a double-handful of classic British bikes as well known as the Norton Combat Commando, this is an opportunity to own a somewhat rare piece of Brit Iron.

SOLD AS-IS, NO WARRANTY. ALL SALES FINAL, NO RETURNS, NO REFUNDS.

Thanx for looking and bidding.

I'm on a Goodwood Revival comedown

Tue, 22 Sep 2009

I'm on a massive comedown after a great weekend at Goodwood Revival. The Revival relives the glory days of the 50s and 60s and that's not just marketing hype, almost everyone is dressed in perios clothing, the cars are all from 1948 to 1966 and the effort that goes into setting Goodwood up is incredible, even the burger vans are retro Citroens, the staff are dressed in period clothing and about the only thing not retro was the price of a bacon sarnie; £6.50, ouch! I only planned to go down on Friday, but I had such a good time I headed back on Sunday too.

Bonneville from a parallel universe

Fri, 20 Sep 2013

This is the Triumph Speed Twin Concept, a bike commissioned by Triumph to show what the Bonneville might have evolved into, in a parallel universe. I love the concept. Designed by Roy Norton and Tom Kasher who were on a placement at a design studio, I get the impression the pair are into motorcycle and not just designers.

See Britain's land speed record hopeful at Race Retro 2010

Tue, 09 Mar 2010

SEE THE MACHINE that could propel Britain to a new motorcycle land speed world record at The Race Retro 2010 show, held at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry from 12th to 14th March. Almost a year has passed since Visordown broke the news of the planned UK assault on the land speed record - this coming August the Angelic Bulldog team travels to Bonneville, where it is hoping to smash the 400mph barrier and bring the motorcycle Land Speed Record back to the UK for the first time since 1937. The current record stands at 360.913mph over a kilometre.
