This Z1-R has been Owned, and stored Professionally for the last 12 years, by the worlds largest private collector and afficianado of Superbikes Mr. Peter Boccarossa, the world renowned owner of SuperBike Universe, This bike was drained of fuel and the cylinders, carbs, and tank all fogged with preservation oil before it was perfectly stored in the SuperBike Universe Museum until 8/12/2016 when it was donated to the New England Motorcycle Museum by Mr. Boccarossa then carefully and painstakingly awoken from its decade of sleep, she roared to life easily with the capable hands of the AMA Concourse #1 Championship winning restoration experts at THE NEW ENGLAND MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM where she is on display and for sale today!

Our licensed mechanics here at Kaplan Cycles completely evaluated this motorcycle and performed the following mechanical and detail services which took 28 hours (including detailing services) x $80 an hour = $2,240.00 in labor and $250 in parts= $2,500.00 Just invested in preservation and tuning services on this Z1-R:

·        Checked cylinder compression on all four (150/150/150/150psi)

·        Checked spark (100% OK)

·        Test ignition coil + caps resistance (coils okay!)

·        Replaced all 4 plug caps

·        Inspected breaker plate assembly + checked point gap/timing

·        Removed timing advancer to clean + grease

·        Clean + adjust point gap, set timing (breaker plate like new)

·        Installed new Yuasa Battery & checked voltage to coils = voltage through harness/ignition switch/ect 100%

·        Performed resistance checks on ignition switch and kill switch

·        Removed upper cowl for access, removed ignition switch to clean contacts inside switch, lube and and retest= good

·        Cleaned battery positive and negative cable ends + frame ground, replaced auxiliary ground wire connection terminals with brand new NOS

·        Disconnected and cleaned multiple electrical connectors

·        Routed wiring correctly

·        Main fuse holder and fuse were replaced

·        Replaced H-4 Hi/Low Headlamp Bulb with New

·        Confirmed proper operation of all electronic functions lighting and charging system

·        Installed new handgrips, disassembled throttle assembly to clean + lubricate, lubed cables + adjusted

·        Replaced fuel line petcock to carbs

·        Added fresh 93 octane fuel w/ stabil and checked petcock operation

·        Installed replacement V+H Baffle w/ packing

·        Visual check of tires/brakes/chain/cables/ oil level

·        Test run - warm up + set air screws and idle speed

·        Test ride

We did not remove the carbs and clean them as we wanted the bike left unmolested original and they were fogged when parked by Mr. Boccarossa so the bike runs and starts as-is after waking from over a decade of professional museum storage, we suggest removing all four carbs and professionally cleaning them to get the bike running 100% perfect. also the rear brakes need servicing, and there is a 1" scratch in the Mint original paint job,  we have procured from the U.K. the proper matching touch up paint and clear coat which will be supplied to the new owner to repair themselves, or we will do the paint repair "FOR FREE" before shipping to its new owner, we do not want to alter the EXTREMELY rare pristine originality of this classic cafe special Z1-R and are showing it As-Is 100% original paint and the new owner can decide as he or she wishes to proceed with the care of the paint!

Here is what Pete Boccarossa had to say about this motorcycle:

1978 Kawasaki KZ1000 Z1R - Tough guys from the eighties...

This is an all original Kawasaki KZ1000 Z1R. It currently has 13k miles and it's in excellent condition for its age. The gas tank is rust free. I purchased it from the original owner about 10 years ago. I rode it only from his house back to mine (about 40 miles) and then I drained the fuel and stored it in my climate control museum to enjoy as a piece of moto art. Everything is stock on the bike except the Vance and Hines 4 into 1 exhaust. Tank has a 1 inch scratch on the left hand side but it is not dented. All the body panels are in great shape so there are no indications that this big boy has ever went unexpectedly surfing. Surprising because this thing is an absolute tank. It probably weighs close to 550 lbs with fuel. The front brake system is a unique mix of cable and hydraulic components. I have never seen anything like this any other bike. One of the special features of the Z1R. These bikes were the true sledgehammers of their day. If you owned one of these back in the early eighties you were definitely singled out as a bad boy.

Here's what CYCLE magazine said about the Z1R BACK IN 1980:

This is no ordinary, run-to-the-store-for-a-loaf-of-bread-and-quart-of-milk Kawasaki here. No, sir. This is 1000 cc of rolling Probable Cause. This is an open-and-shut case of Profiling In The First Degree With Apparent Intent To Exceed The Posted Limits. This is a motorcycle which radiates the essence of motion so effectively that the cop hiding behind the billboard might suspect you were speeding when you came past at ten miles per hour under the limit.

Make no mistake about it: the local citizens including the guys in the black-and-white car with the red lights on the roof will make a number of assumptions when they see you tooling past on a Z1-R, one of which is that as soon as you get out of their sight, the throttle will be thrust wide open, and you and your sleek, silvery motorcycle will disappear in one thunderous onslaught of ear-splitting noise and blinding speed. Joe Average hasn't the foggiest idea why anyone would buy such a motorcycle, but he's damned sure that whatever the reason, it has nothing to do with practicality, gas economy or around-town commuting.

But the Z1-R is much more than just another pseudo-roadracer, anyway. It is, in our opinion, a masterpiece of styling integrity, a tidy, up-to-date design exercise that leaves previous cafe attempts standing in the dust.

The R has what most bikes of its type do not; a styling theme, a common design thread which runs from one end of the bike to the other. The R's theme is straight sides and sharp corners, and the execution is with graceful, angular lines that flow so naturally from one area to the next that the bodywork sometimes appears to be all one piece.

2012 Kawasaki Versys 1000 Makes North American Debut in Canada

Wed, 11 Jan 2012

As we’ve previously reported, the new Kawasaki Versys 1000 will not be imported to the U.S, but it will be available in North America in Canada as a 2012 model. Kawasaki Canada presented the Versys 1000 at its display at this past weekend’s North American International Motorcycle Supershow in Toronto, for the new “adventure sport” model’s debut on this side of the Atlantic. While he can’t speak for Kawasaki USA’s decision making, Bob Calwell, district manager for Kawasaki Canada, he does note that the Canadian company does have a history of making different product selections.
