1966 Honda Cl on 2040-motos
Honda CL tech info
Honda CL description
Up for auction is my 1966 CL77 305 Honda
Scrambler. This bike was restored in
2009 and won 2nd place in the 2009 Keeneland Concours d’elegance show, losing only to a mint
condition 1968 rare Triumph Bonneville.
As you can see from the pics, I have replaced or restored almost every
part in this bike, and mostly with OEM Honda parts whenever available. This is strictly a show bike as I have only
ridden it about 135 miles since restoration but it starts great, rides and
shifts good and has that famous 305 sound that you can recognize anywhere. The serial number on this bike is
CL77-1031422 and the motor serial number is CL77E-1031461. If you don’t know this already, Honda did not
match up exactly the motor and serial numbers but they should be close like
this one. It has been garage kept,
covered, and has only had a misting rain on it once during my last motorcycle
show. This bike was like a barn find, stored for
almost 20 years till I bought it from a man in Indiana. I have most of the receipts for the work
that was done to this bike along with an original Honda Owners Manual, a like new original CL77 tool kit, and a
clear Kentucky title. Details: All the electrical system works great,
horn blows (squeeks), Lights, Hi-Low beam, Brake/Tail light, charges good. This bike
has 4478 actual miles. I have an Indiana
title that shows 4340 miles on it when I purchased it. a) The bike was torn down completely and the
Frame, Swing Arm, Kickstand, Skid Plate, and rider footrest bracket were powder
coated b) All the chrome parts were triple
chromed by Browns Plating in Paducah, KY. NOTE: The muffler baffles have
been removed and sounds good. On this
serial number bike, the muffler is removable.
After serial number 1033482, the muffler was welded to the exhaust
pipes. Many people took off the muffler
and replaced them with Snuff-or-Nots for a more open sound. c) All the zinc parts were zinc plated
locally. d) The tank, fenders, side covers and
upper crankcase cover were painted by a professional who paints Harley Davidson
custom parts for the local Harley shop.
The gas tank was primed with epoxy primer to protect against gas spills
and then everything was painted with Mazda’s Sunbeam Silver, which is DuPont
Centauri 45040A, the closest paint color
to the original Honda’s Cloud Silver. e) The speedometer was sent to a
restorer in California, Bucks Vintage Gauge Restoration, for complete
restoration. f) The engine was bored .75mm over, to
match the OEM Honda pistons and rings I found on ebay, and the heads had a valve
job, replacing one valve that was out of tolerance. This work was done by Mike Wells Racing who
races vintage motorcycles and has been a Honda mechanic for over 30 years. g) The following parts were purchased
for the bike for assembly: a. New OEM front fork inner tubes (still
in the box), fork boots, and fork clamps.
One of the old ones had a leak in it. b. OEM kick starter and passenger peg rubber c. aftermarket seat cover d. OEM DID drive chain e. Correct size street tires, 3.00 x 19
front and 3.50 x 19 rear f. New OEM brake switch, main switch,
fork lock switch, clutch and brake handles, clutch/brake/gas and speedo cables
and headlight. g. Bike has original wiring harness, A
and B. I installed new vintage
connectors on all ends that match the originals h. OEM rectifier i.
Transmission
was inspected, no gears were worn but the 1st gear brass bushing was
worn and replaced with an OEM one j.
OEM
cam chain, chain tensioner, head studs and all cover and head screws were
installed k. Every o-ring, gasket, and seal was
replaced l.
OEM
hand grips, clutch and brake adjuster’s w/springs m. New clutches and clutch springs n. Coils were tested with new wires and
spark plug connectors o. Yuasa 12N5 4B battery p. Brakes were checked, cleaned and new
springs. q. New spokes, laced by Mike Wells
Racing r. New gas cap
I probably
didn’t list everything I did, I had
recorded everything in a composition book as it was built but it is packed away
somewhere since we have recently moved. The trophy, ribbon and plaque goes with the
bike however, they are also packed away so I will have to ship them to you when
we go thru all our boxes. This might not
happen till the end of the year. CONS: a) When the gas tank is full, gas septs
out the vent hole in the gas cap sometimes.
This was a problem for Honda and not sure what to do about it. b) The tires are new and correct size
but they are not the nobby tires that came on the Scramblers. c) There is a small scratch and a paint blemish on the rear
fender, see pics d) Paint is worn off the end of the
chain guard where it goes into the right side cover. Probably needs to be re-adjusted.
if your
going to ship it, you can arrange everything with the shipper and I will work
with them to have it loaded up. A $500 down
payment must be made within 48 hours thru paypal after the sale unless you
email me or it goes back up for auction. Final
payment can be with paypal or cash only, no checks of any kind. If you have
any question, please email me and I will get back with you as soon as I can. Good luck
and happy bidding. JDSurge |

60's styled electric concept bike
Mon, 19 Mar 2012This electric concept bike takes the styling of an Ossa Grand Prix ridden in late 1960s by Santiago Herrero and brings it into the 21st century. From Barcelona design studio ART-TIC the Monocasco takes its styling cues from Ossa's monocoque racing bike that was introduced at the end of the 1960s. Spain's first motorcycle Grand Prix hero, Herrero took the bike to four victories before his fatal crash in the 1970 Isle of Man TT.
