Can-Am is a motorcycle producing subsidiary of the Bombardier Recreational Products, a Canadian corporation.
In 1973, under the direction and leadership of an American Engineer named Gary Robinson and former motocross World Champion, Jeff Smith working with a team of California desert racers, Can-Am began producing motocross and enduro bikes using engines provided by the Austrian Rotax company, another Bombardier subsidiary.
The machines made an immediate impact with riders winning Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the International Six Days Trial, a form of off-road motorcycle Olympics. The following year, the company swept the 1974 AMA 250 cc motocross national championship with Can-Am riders Gary Jones, Marty Tripes and Jimmy Ellis, finishing first, second and third.
The Rotax motors used a slightly unusual style of intake. A rotary disc system was employed and this plate was altered repeatedly between T'n'T (track and trail) and MX models. This plate is accredited with the horsepower gain over conventional piston port motors used on Japanese motorcycles. The MX3, produced in 1977, was the pinnacle of Can Am. Its 36 horsepower (27 kW) was 6 more than the closest competitor.
However, soon Bombardier changed its priorities, so at first investment in Can-Am was reduced, later motorcycle production was outsourced to Armstrong-CCM Motorcycles (England). 1987 was the final year Can-Am motorcycles were produced.
Though in 2006, Bombardier Recreational Products reintroduced the Can-Am brand with its all-terrain vehicles (ATV). In 2007, the Can-Am brand was also used to introduce the Can-Am Spyder a new three-wheeled roadster.

Bombardier Recreational Products has revealed the F3, the newest member to its three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder roadster family. Sporting a more muscular stance and the all-new UFit customizable footpeg and handlebar system, the F3 joins the returning Spyder RT, ST and RS in the 2015 product lineup. Can-Am/BRP has just taken the (photographic) wraps off the 2015 Can-Am Spyder F3! Although little official information is available, we can take some educated guesses based on what we can see in this photo plus the spy shots we published a couple weeks ago. The new, more aggressive front end prominently features a radiator grill, which we expect will provide the increased cooling required by a beefed up version of the liquid-cooled Rotax 1330 ACE in-line 3 cylinder mill currently powering the Spyder RT tourer.

The U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have launched a new free online tool that should make it easier for consumers to inspect their vehicles’ safety recall histories. The new search tool, available at http://www.safercar.gov/vinlookup, allows people to look for recall campaigns by entering Vehicle Identification Numbers.

Canadian company Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) has an ongoing relationship with the National Hockey League (NHL), and it’s latest iteration has sports legends telling how much they like riding Can-Am Spyders. An earlier video had NASCAR racer Danica Patrick riding the Spyder around Charlotte Motor Speedway. Well, not BRP has tapped six-time Stanley Cup champion Mark Messier to use his own special technique to reach out to potential riders.

The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) reported a modest 1.4% growth in U.S. motorcycle and scooter sales in 2013, with consumers purchasing 465,783 vehicles. The sales data represents numbers from the MIC’s member brands which include BMW, Can-Am, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, the Piaggio Group (which includes Aprilia, Moto Guzzi and Vespa), Victory, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha.

From the “Answer To Question Nobody Asked” department comes this: wheel adaptors for the Can-Am Spyder to allow more conventional five-lug wheels to replace the standard three-luggers. Available from C & S Custom. C & S says the adaptors are a direct fit onto the existing Spyder hubs, and can accept a 5mm x 114mm bolt pattern which is common on many small cars.

Today the motorcycle press descended upon the Long Beach Convention Center to attend media day at the annual International Motorcycle Show.
