This is a rare mostly original 1936 Sunbeam Model 9 500cc sport touring pre war motorcycle, it was owned for many years by motorcycle author Harry V Sucher  - Harry wrote The Iron Redskin, Milwaukee Marvel, History of American Motorcycling and more, shown below is the bill of sale from Harry Sucher to his friend Frank in 2001. I brought it from Frank who owned it for 15 years, both of them rode this machine quite a lot on club runs and other events, I was told Harry loved this bike and wrote about it in his History of American Motorcycling book but I do not have the book so can not confirm this, Harry owned this bike from the late 1970's to 2001. As you can see from the pictures below, it is a typical British restoration of many years ago, some parts had pitting and were just painted over ( wheels, spokes and a couple of other parts ) it seems to be mostly original all major parts are correct and original, tank, fenders, wheels, all the sheet metal, forks hubs, switches, levers, bars etc, I think the headlamp and seat are reproductions although now decades old also, and now have a very nice old patina. This bike is about as original as I think you will find one, of this now very rare  Sunbeam machine being 80 years old and one year before Sunbeam stopped making motorcycles in 1937, ( sold to BSA in 1943 who produced the S7/S8 with the Sunbeam name ), It runs very well, the 4 speed transmission shifts with the familiar British motorcycle feel and goes through all gears exactly as it should, it starts easily and runs great in fact this just might be the easiest motorcycle you will start with it's semi valve lifer that starts it right up with no fuss. The electrics all work great, the battery in it is old and just for show, the Lucas magdyno puts out plenty of power for all the lights and horn etc to run without the battery. the wiring is a bit amateur and could be cleaned up a bit. This bike is very nice to ride very smooth and enjoyable vintage machine for 80 years old that is good for long and short distance rides, brakes and clutch work very well, brakes are very decent for age with large interchangeable 8 inch wheels and hubs, last owner relined the rear with a metal material and it squeals when used I think it should have a softer material put on the shoes, it's large brakes are quite good for the period but obviously not as good as modern brakes, the tires are Coker still very good with loads of tread for the road and quite new, all the nickel plating on this bike is still very good and well above average, as you can see the engine is a work or art. there are no dents in any of the body work, paint is average and looks a bit better in the photos than in real life but has a nice old patina. The exhaust and mufflers look good. Some fasteners are are not correct and later. I have not detailed or really cleaned this motorcycle it is as i found it it could be a lot brighter with a proper detailing I just wiped it down with a soft cloth thats all i have done. Overall this bike has a great patina and in my opinion is just how you would want to find a nice old pre war British motorcycle which runs and rides great. I do not know the real milage on the bike, the mileage shown on the speedo could be correct as of time of restoration back in the 70's.
