1976 CCM Clews Competition Machines

500cc MotoCross

-NOTE- Due to eBay's inability to control their zero feedback buyer 'cancer' plaguing their site, I have had to resort to an immediate deposit due upon hitting the buy it now. This is the only way to discourage the thousands of ebay loonies from hitting buy it now, and who then think it's really funny to simply vanish on their purchase obligation. I know I'm not the only seller on ebay struggling with this issue now. If this is a problem for any serious buyer, please call me to discuss. Thanks for understanding--Az-Mike 623-465-0636

1976 CCM 500 MX -- Developed from BSA's demise from the racing scene, these were true 'works bikes' that the general public could actually buy (as long as you had the money!). Developed by Alan Clews, these bikes were full-on custom built to be the ultimate 4-stroke motocrosser's of their day. Alan Clews, founder of CCM, was a successful Trials and Scrambles rider in the late 1960s. He wanted a lighter, more nimble and modern motocross bike, like the BSA factory engined 500 cc works specials. When the BSA Competition Department went out of business, he saw his opportunity and bought all the works parts that were available. Clews started building motocross bikes in his garage. Having no access to BSA works engines, Clews made his own extensive improvements to the standard BSA B50 500 cc engine, obtained by breaking up B50 MX bikes. His reputation grew as a builder of four-stroke motocross bikes that were capable of competing with the dominant two-stroke bikes. In the mid-1970s, the CCM racing team achieved respectable results in the 500 cc Motocross World Championship, with rider John Banks placing in the top five several times.

Original Falk fenders. Orig. fiberglass fuel tank w/original paint. Magura controls. Rebuilt Works Performance finned shocks. Orig. Amal carb. Original CCM magnesium engine cases, wheels, triple clamps, & fork legs helped these bikes weigh in at only 230 lbs. dry. Aluminum number plates. Forks were just rebuilt. New Twin Air filter. Original British Dunlop K88 rear knobby and Metzler front appear to have around 85-95% tread left. This is a low mileage bike.

Extremely quick bikes with massive torque. These were crazy expensive bikes costing $4000 in 1976, which equates to around $20,000 today. Hand built nickle plated chromoly frame. Each bike was 100% hand built utilising the absolute best components and true 'works' BSA motors, and are largely considered by most today to be the ultimate vintage thumper racers of all time. This example is largely original and has undergone a cosmetic restoration to 'as raced' condition.

I found this bike in Long Island, NY and was purchased as part of a collection of very special bikes. It looks like it was hardly ridden at all. Super trick, rare, and extremely collectible. If you have a high-end vintage MX bike collection and don't already have a CCM, then it is most certainly incomplete. This bike looks extremely nice. This is an early '76 model with no frame loop over rear fender. The frame loop ends are capped and nickle plated.

NOTE: Spark is intermittant and may need a new ignition system, or at the very least an overhaul by a skilled BSA ignition specialist. Currently has NO OIL in frame or engine.

Very few of these were made (less than 50?) and this is frame serial number 76018 (18th bike built in 1976). Tom White (White Bros.) has one of these in his collection and he values his at $20,000.00 in 2016 dollars. Here's your chance to buy mine at 1/2 price.

This bike is also for sale on my website AzMikesVMXbikes.com, and I reserve the right to end auction early with an acceptable offer. Any buyers wishing to make offer may contact me and I will insert a Buy-it Now option here on ebay so that buyer may end the auction early.

The Fonz Never Really Rode a Motorcycle!

Tue, 02 Jun 2009

According to the “King of Cool” himself, “The Fonz” (Henry Winkler) never actually rode any motorcycles during the ten year Happy Days television run.  Winkler, never rode a bike in real life either, he has dyslexia, which made it difficult for him to co-ordinate the clutch, throttle and brake.  Instead, the bikes (Harley Davidson’s, Triumph’s, BSA’s were used) were mounted on a piece of wood with wheels to make it look like he was riding, even though I am not shocked, I am a little disappointed… You can watch the interview with Winkler, the famous motorcycle jump “The Fonz” made over 14 trashcans and a bonus “Jump the Shark” video after the jump.
